Sharjah: Police have urged warehouse owners to properly monitor their premises after a recent burglary in Industrial Area 12.

It was recently announced that nearly 26,000 crimes occurred last year in Sharjah and that 20 per cent of them were carried out in the industrial areas.

"This is the second time we were robbed. The first time we lost copper cables worth Dh40,000 from our warehouse. We were robbed last week and lost copper cables again, as well as other valuable items," said Mohammad Faiyaz Ahmad, general manager of the warehouse.

"Both the incidents were [related] by the Gulf News delivery boy [in the] early morning," he said, and added that the management staff were shocked when they saw the state of the warehouse after it was broken into two weeks ago.

The theft, Ahmad explained, was allegedly carried out by breaking the four locks on the main gate and one door had been completely broken off its hinges.

"We will hire a security guard because I do not think that a watchman will be [efficient enough] when faced with thieves."

According to the police official, the Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police are carrying out an investigation.

Sharjah Police will open a new police station in Al Saja'a Industrial Area in March.

Major General Humaid Al Hudaidi, Director General of Sharjah Police said in a statement that up to 40 police stations and 20 rescue centres will be operational in 2010, in addition to a new forensic laboratory that will be opened next year.

A senior official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News that warehouse owners should take necessary precautions to avoid becoming possible targets. Owners are advised to install closed-circuit TV cameras inside and outside their warehouses, in addition to hiring security guards or a watchman.

"Warehouses that do not take any security measures will be vulnerable ... Warehouses should be equipped with an alarm system that connects to the police operations room."
