A man and his girlfriend were arrested for drugs possession and adultery.

The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours sentenced a 26-year-old Iranian man to five years in prison followed by deportation. His 25-year-old Uzbek girlfriend was fined Dh1,000, and sentenced to four years and three months in prison, followed by deportation.

According to court reports, on June 14, an informer tipped the anti-narcotics police that the accused had opium in his apartment.

The police squad raided the shop where the Iranian works and arrested him. The squad then searched his house and found 3.8 grammes of opium hidden in a wooden box.

The police also found his girlfriend, along with another Uzbek woman, staying at the apartment. They were arrested and taken to the Nayef police station for interrogation.

During questioning, the Iranian confessed that he bought the opium from another Iranian called Ameera. He admitted that the Uzbek woman was his girlfriend and lived with him.

The woman denied she was taking drugs but confessed that she did drink alcohol. She added that she arrived in Abu Dhabi on a visit visa a few months ago and moved to Dubai after her visa expired. She turned to prostitution because her sponsor confiscated her passport.
