New policy boosts conservation efforts as marine resources show signs of recovery

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi has unveiled a redesigned strategy for its sustainable fisheries policy, issuing a new decision aimed at safeguarding the emirate’s marine resources.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), has issued Decision No. (8) of 2025 approving the Sustainable Fisheries Policy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The strategic move underscores the emirate’s steadfast commitment to conserving its marine resources and strengthening the long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector, especially as fish stocks show encouraging signs of recovery thanks to the regulatory and management measures implemented by EAD in recent years.
Under the decision, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi will coordinate with relevant authorities to monitor the policy’s implementation tools according to a clear and well-defined timeline, and to oversee the analysis of its outcomes using systematic and structured procedures that support the achievement of the policy’s objectives.
This initiative aligns with the emirate’s broader direction to promote sustainable management of natural resources and enhance the resilience of marine ecosystems against environmental and climate challenges. The new policy aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of fish resources, enhance the environmental, social, and economic value of the sector, and support governance, scientific research, and innovation to ensure effective fisheries management. It also seeks to protect local species from overfishing, build community capacity for sustainable practices, and encourage partnerships among government entities, the private sector, and local communities to ensure the responsible use of marine resources.
The policy is built around several key pillars and implementation pathways that focus on science-based fisheries management, strengthening monitoring and research programs to assess fish stock levels and marine habitats, and developing legislation and practices related to fishing activities. It also supports sustainable aquaculture initiatives and the rehabilitation of natural habitats, including coral reefs and mangrove forests.
The policy places particular emphasis on empowering local fishermen and raising their awareness about the importance of conserving marine resources by adopting environmentally and economically sustainable fishing methods.
The Sustainable Fisheries Policy holds particular significance as it provides a comprehensive framework for managing this vital sector one that represents an integral part of the UAE’s cultural heritage and identity, and serves as an important contributor to food security and sustainable economic growth. Responsibly managed fisheries help maintain healthy marine food webs, support biodiversity, and enhance carbon storage, thereby reinforcing the sector’s integrated environmental and economic role in achieving Abu Dhabi’s sustainable development goals.
