First Look: Sony A6300

Sony launched the a6300 last month to add to its line of mirrorless cameras. The camera boasts Sony’s latest 4D focus system that can lock on a subject in as little as 0.05 seconds, the world’s fastest AF acquisition time. 

 

Additionally, it has an incredible 425 phase detection: AF points that are densely positioned over the entire image area — the world’s highest number of AF points on any interchangeable lens camera — and can shoot images at up to 11 frames per second with continuous autofocus and exposure tracking.

 

The camera is equipped with a newly developed 24.2MP APS-C-sized Exmor CMOS sensor that works together with a Bionz X image processing engine to produce the entire ISO sensitivity range of 100-51,200.

 

The new a6300 can also shoot and record high-resolution 4K video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning in the Super 35mm format. 

 

The camera also has the ability to support full live-view continuous shooting on the Tru-Finder or LCD screen at up to 8 frames per second, ultimately producing a real-time shooting experience that combines all the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the immediacy of a through-the-lens optical viewfinder.

 

In addition to the AF coverage, the a6300 debuts a high-density tracking AF technology that can quickly activate a large number of AF points around a subject — at about 7.5 times more density than the a6000 — and intelligently adjust them in accordance with the subject’s motion. 

 

This is a particularly powerful feature when used with high-speed 11 fps continuous shooting or the new 8 fps continuous live-view mode.

 

The camera feels solid in hand thanks to its magnesium alloy body and comes Wi-Fi- and NFC-enabled. 

 

Based on the little hands-on time I had with the product, Sony is doing what it has strived to do over a period of time: enhance the software of its high-end hardware to produce greater quality of imagery.

 

Considering the price tag of Dh4,000, Sony hasn’t limited the product to an elite band of customers and has kept it accessible to all.
