The Samsung Series 9 T27A950 is a TV/monitor hybrid that pushes the limits of visual possibilities
We've moved on from monitors being an afterthought in our computer purchase process to where due attention is given to the display. Of course, monitors have also evolved from a standard boxy piece of equipment to sleek display devices that come in a variety of options: screen sizes, resolutions, styles, connectivity and more.
The Samsung Series 9 T27A950 is a TV/monitor hybrid that pushes the boundaries of visual possibilities. The model I reviewed had a screen size of 27 inches, but it's available in smaller sizes too.
The monitor is packed with features and connectivity options, which is why its slim form factor in the screen comes as a pleasant surprise. It has the feel of a premium build — the front being a glossy black with the back having a brushed metal finish.
Video connectivity
Available with the T27A950 is a plethora of connectivity options — all sorts of video connectivity (including HDMI, VGA and proprietary, among others), audio connectivity (optical 5.1 audio, 3.5mm input and output) and USB ports for connecting your hard drive or a wireless dongle. Yes, you're connecting a hard drive to a monitor here.
The monitor features 3D capabilities and a dedicated 3D button on the panel and on the included remote. Bundled also is a pair of battery-powered 3D glasses. The monitor also features 2D to 3D conversion. However, the results were of a mixed nature. But the regular picture quality is fantastic. Moreover, the monitor gives you extensive control in terms of settings including backlight levels, shadow detail and Gamma. It may not mean a lot to most users, but you do have fine control over the end picture.
Smart hub
The T27A950 actually crosses the monitor boundary into the computer region. Hit the Smart Hub button on the remote and you have access to a range of features — including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. And it doesn't stop there. There are a range of downloadable apps that will add extend the functionality of the monitor.
The monitor features a set of speakers and these worked surprisingly well. The volume touched surprising highs while maintaining excellent sound quality. While it won't match the quality of a good set of speakers with subwoofers, the sound from the monitor has a decent level of bass and doesn't feel flat, even at high volumes.
The Samsung T27A950 is nothing short of stunning — with a crisp visual display, excellent sound and a variety of connectivity options, it is a solid offering. Add to that the ability to connect your storage and downloadable apps and this TV/monitor moves closer to the computer domain — maybe the future of display.
The only thing stopping you (maybe) is the heavy price tag it comes with. Costing Dh3,500 for the 27-inch version, there are few who need a monitor this big, or a TV this small. The T27A950 sits between the two — awkwardly according to some, snugly according to the rest.
