Pakistan’s Ahmed Daniyal made a memorable international debut on Tuesday in the second T20I against Bangladesh, delivering an impressive performance that offered a rare silver lining after the team’s defeat in the series opener.
The 28-year-old fast bowler replaced leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed in the only change to Pakistan’s playing XI following their seven-wicket loss in the first match.
Seizing the opportunity, Daniyal bowled four tidy overs, conceding just 23 runs and claiming two crucial wickets.
Making an instant impact, Daniyal clocked 146 kmph in his very first over, drawing praise for his raw pace and inviting comparisons to Pakistan’s legendary speedster Shoaib Akhtar, known as the “Rawalpindi Express.”
Born in Lahore, Daniyal first gained attention during the 2021 Pakistan Super League while playing for Lahore Qalandars. His performances earned him a contract with Melbourne Renegades for the 2022 Big Bash League. Despite making a name for himself in T20 franchise circuits, a national call-up eluded him until now.
Ahead of the match, Daniyal received his maiden T20I cap from team manager Naveed Akram Cheema, becoming the 123rd player to represent Pakistan in the shortest format.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Daniyal has played 37 T20 matches, taking 36 wickets at an average of 31.16.
While his debut was promising, Daniyal still has much to prove before being likened to Akhtar, who holds the record for the fastest delivery in cricket history — 161.3 kmph. Nonetheless, the Pakistan camp will be encouraged by the emergence of another genuine pace prospect.
