Dubai: The UAE ladies shooting team brought fame and glory to their country on the occasion of the UAE National Day when they won two golds and one silver on Friday, the first day of the shooting event in the West Asian Games, held in Doha.
Shamma Al Muhairi was the first lady in the history of the West Asian Games to win a gold medal after the ladies were allowed to take part in the Games for the first time since 1997. Shamma won the gold medal in the 25 metre pistol event.
"It's an excellent achievement, I can't express my feeling. I won the gold medal despite a long break. However, with lot of hard work in a short span of time, I recovered my standards, even though I was practising without a trainer," said Shamma after winning two gold medals.
The first was in the individual 25metre pistol event and the second was the team gold in the same event.
Dedicates victory
Shamma dedicated the dazzling achievement to Lt General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, for his tremendous support to the ladies shooting team.
Aysha Al Qubaisi won the silver medal in the 25metre pistol event after she finished five points behind the gold medallist and her compatriot Shamma, who scored 566 points.
The UAE team, who won the gold, comprised Shamma, Aysha and Shaikha Al Rumaithi, who came fourth in the individual standing behind the bronze medallist Nasima Bour of Iran, who scored 546 points and Shaikha 541.
The UAE team scored a total of 1,659 points. Qatar ladies' team came second with 1,532 points while Iran finished third with 1,501 points.
Meanwhile, the UAE men's trap team won the bronze medal in the trap event held yesterday in Doha. The UAE team was represented by Ahmad Bin Mejrin, Hamad Bin Mejrin and Sultan Ateeq.
The gold medal was won by the Kuwaiti team and the silver went to the Lebanese squad.
