Young Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Bocharov sensationally defeated his Iranian counterpart Ehsan Ghaem Maghami to win the Masters Tournament at the 14th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival.
Young Russian Grandmaster Dmitry Bocharov sensationally defeated his Iranian counterpart Ehsan Ghaem Maghami to win the Masters Tournament at the 14th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival.
With three players going into the final round tied on six points each (Bocharov, Maghami and Pavel Kotsur), Bocharov's victory proved decisive as Kazakhstan's Kotsur was held to a draw by Russian top seed Evgeny Vladimirov in the ninth and final round.
Twenty-two-year-old Bocharov finished with seven points while Kotsur, Russian GM Mikhail Kobalia and India's Pentala Harikrishna were joint second with 6.5 points.
Kobalia beat Armenian GM Artashes Minasian while Harikrishna accounted for Russian GM Evgeny Vladimirov in final round.
Maghami, Vladimirov, Armenian GM Ashot Anastasian and Uzbekistan's Marat Dzhumaev were joint third with 6 points each.
Woman Interantional Master Elena Titova-Boric from Bosnia and Herzegovina won the Open Tournament despite being held to a draw by Pakistan's Rana Farooq in the ninth and final round.
Boric finished with 7.5 points from nine rounds while Farooq accumulated 7 points in his campaign to share the second spot with Miran Khademi.
Azemati Amir comfortable won the Children's tournament when he settled for a draw with Ebrahim Abdulaziz in the seventh and final round. AbdulAziz was among seven players including Jakhongir Vakhidov, Karmastaji Abdullah, Ali Shaika, HamzaMuhamad, Reza Rostamzade and Masha Boric who tied for the second place.
UAE computer chess programme Hydra beat nine-time world champion Shredder.
