Sharjah: Qatari athlete Aya Majdi won the gold medal in the table tennis individual tournament in the second Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) 2014 at Sharjah Ladies Club.

With this achievement, Majdi added the fifth table tennis medal to her country’s collection, after also receiving the gold medal with her colleague Maha Abdul Ridha in the doubles, while fellow Qataris Noura Al Abri and Kholoud Abdul Ridha won the bronze medal.

In the team competition, Majdi also played a pivotal role in winning the silver medal for the Qatari team, who were runners-up to Kuwait’s Al Fatat Club. Qatar’s presence at the podium was not restricted to Majdi, as her colleague Maha Abdul Ridha also won the third place.

A total 18 players from five countries — the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen and Kuwait — took part in the table tennis.

The AWST event, held under the patronage of Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, runs until February 12.
