Formula 1 star Hamilton subject of racial abuse in Spain

Barcelona: Spain may lose its Grand Prix after British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton was subjected to racial abuse from spectators during a practice drive near Barcelona.

The 23-year-old was jeered and insulted by many onlookers, while some even wore black make-up and t-shirts bearing the misspelt slogan ‘Hamilton's Familly'.

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, has warned Spain could be stripped of its grand prix as a result of such incidents.

A spokesman said: "The FIA is surprised and disappointed at the abuse directed at Lewis Hamilton. An act of this kind is a clear breach of the principles enshrined in the FIA statutes and any repetition will result in sanctions."

This year Spain will host two Grands Prix, the Spanish race in April at Circuit de Catalunya, and the European Grand Prix on the streets of Valencia in August.
