Scotland star blows away Meronk, Kinhult and Hanna in stormy Doha
Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson claimed his maiden DP World Tour title on Sunday as his two-under 70 was enough to hold off a host of challengers at the Qatar Masters in Doha.
Just like on Saturday, strong winds meant low scores were at a premium and Ferguson secured a one-stroke victory from American Chase Hanna.
Poland’s Adrian Meronk — the overnight co-leader with Matthew Jordan — had to settle for a tie for third with Swede Marcus Kinhult on five-under in the $2 million event at Doha Golf Club.
Englishman Jordan was one further back in a bunch on four-under, including Dubai-based Spaniard Adrian Otaegui, Marcus Armitage, Pablo Larrazabal, Justin Harding Kalle Samooja and Gavin Green.
Meronk was still within touching distance over the closing stretch but a par on 17 meant he needed an eagle on the last to take the tournament to a play-off and his approach from the rough found the water to spark celebrations for Ferguson who was anxiously waiting in the scorers tent.
“It’s been years and years of hard work,” Ferguson said. “My mum, dad, sister and brother, my whole family have given me everything to get to this moment and it’s an absolute dream come true.
“I just rang my dad and he said that he is so, so proud. I’ve been in contention enough on Challenge Tours and out here with this year a bit. I just managed to deal with it today and I am a winner now, which is incredible. I’ve been working with my coach Jamie Gough all this year and last, just changing stuff and making sure my swing is right. I know that my mum will be at home watching, so that is for her on Mother’s Day.”
