Abu Dhabi: Rory McIlroy has made it clear: he loves finishing his golfing season in the Middle East. The five-time Major winner and current Race to Dubai leader will return to Yas Links from November 6–9 for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first event of the DP World Tour Play-Offs.

The Northern Irishman’s fondness for the region adds a personal spark to what is already a crucial part of his season. After an impressive year crowned by his Masters victory and a strong showing at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, McIlroy is set to chase a record-equalling seventh Race to Dubai title.

A perfect season finale

“I love ending the season in the Middle East and I’m excited to return to Abu Dhabi again for the first of two big events later this year,” McIlroy said.

“The atmosphere is incredible, the courses suit my game, and the hospitality is unmatched. I’ve started the year well and I’ve got a good record at Yas Links, so hopefully I can continue doing what I’m doing and give myself a chance to finish the season strongly.”

McIlroy’s affection for the Middle East reflects a broader shift in the world of professional golf, where the region has become a key destination on the global calendar.

Abu Dhabi’s rise as a golfing hotspot

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, staged by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the DP World Tour, marks the beginning of the DP World Tour’s season finale, leading up to the DP World Tour Championship where the Race to Dubai champion will be crowned.

Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “Abu Dhabi has firmly established itself as a world-class golfing destination by hosting internationally recognised tournaments that attract elite players from around the globe. We are proud to welcome Rory McIlroy — one of the sport’s greatest talents — to the 2025 edition.

“Events like this showcase the UAE’s proven ability to host world-class sporting competitions and highlight the growing importance of the Middle East in the global golf landscape.”

Chasing history

Earlier this year, McIlroy made history by becoming the first European to complete the career Grand Slam, adding a Green Jacket to his four previous Major victories.

Now, he aims for a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai title, with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship the perfect stage to set the tone for the play-offs.

England’s Paul Waring, who claimed his maiden Rolex Series title last year, will also be among the field as the tournament returns for its fourth consecutive season to Yas Links.
