Scotsman equals tour record for widest winning margin
Sotogrande: David Law shot 68 to finish seven under par, a record-equalling six strokes clear, in his first Mena Golf Tour win at the Sotogrande Masters - round three of the 19 stage season - on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Scotsman came into the final round two shots clear and played his last 12 holes at five under following an earlier bogey to finish on 209 after earlier rounds of 74 and 67.
“It feels great to win my first event on tour after two runners-up finishes (in 2013),” said Law, who equalled the tour record for largest winning margin of six strokes, which was first achieved by England’s Ross McGowan in Abu Dhabi in 2012. “The thinking was to stay in the moment and focus on what I needed to do, and that’s make birdies. Basically, I tried to play golf the way I did on the first two days. It’s a tough course from tee to green, but I’m very happy with my golf. I putted well and took opportunities that came my way,”
England’s Zane Scotland finished second at one under par after a final round of 69. Spain’s Victor Bertran made the biggest move on the last day with a six under 66 - the best score of the tournament - to finish tied for third on level par with Italy’s Rocco Sanjust. The Spaniard carded eight birdies, one eagle and a bogey in a round that improved on his second day’s 78 by 12 strokes.
Morocco’s Yassine Touhami won the amateur division on 10 over after a closing 75, nine shots clear of Spain’s Salvador Paya Vila, as Saudi Arabia’s Khaled Attieh settled for third a further three shots adrift.
Fellow Moroccan Younus Al Hassani topped the Mena division for professionals on 14 over after a neck-and-neck battle with compatriot Faycal Serghini.
Elsewhere, last year’s Mena Tour Order of Merit winner Thriston Lawrence returned a final 70 to take a share of fifth with Spain’s Manuel Quiros on one over. An eagle - his second of the tournament - highlighted the South African’s final round.
England’s Miles Tunnicliff, a two-time winner on the European Tour, also made his presence felt, closing with a four-under 68 to settle for tied 13th as England’s Andrew Marshall, the current Order of Merit leader, moved into a tie for seventh on two over after a final round 71. The next event on tour will be the Ras Al Khaimah Classic to be held at the Tower Links Golf Club from May 2.
