Wenger has no plans to buy players

London: Arsene Wenger has confirmed title-contenders Arsenal will not be shopping for big-name players in next month's transfer window, despite the club's £56 million (Dh323 million) profit this year.

Wenger's stance in resisting pressure to spend heavily will astonish trophy-starved Arsenal fans. Asked in a television interview with Al Jazeera why he no longer signed "big players", he replied: "... You look at the clubs who lose £100 million or £150 million and if we do that then we go bust. We pay what we can afford. I'm amazed that people are amazed that we do that. I think what is surprising is that people don't respect that.

"If I tell you we can win two more points but we lose £150 million, what will you say? Win two more points. But I ask a second question: where do we get the £150 million in? Maybe you don't have the same answer."

Arsenal are the only English team still in four competitions and are about to embark on a potential 11 games in 34 days.

Nicklas Bendtner has again hinted he could quit the club. He has played a bit-part role since returning from injury and said: "At the end of the season we can see ... how well we have done."
