Lionel Messi’s 854th career goal was a moment of pure brilliance, as the Argentine maestro delivered a stunning chip to inspire Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over Atlanta United.

Trailing 1-0 after an early Atlanta goal in the 11th minute, Messi stepped up to change the game. Pouncing on a loose ball outside the box, he beat a defender with ease before lofting a perfectly judged chip over goalkeeper Brad Guzan to equalise in the 20th minute.

The goal, Messi’s fourth of the season but first in the MLS this season, evoked memories of his Barcelona heyday.

Having missed three games due to muscle fatigue, the Argentinian had returned to action off the bench in Miami’s 2-0 win over Cavalier FC last Thursday. Starting for the first time since his injury on Monday, he looked as sharp as ever, driving Miami forward to victory.

It was just Messi’s second start of the season, but his impact has been undeniable. With four goals and two assists in all competitions, the Argentine has contributed to a goal in every game he’s played this season.

His strike against Atlanta was particularly memorable - not just for its artistry but also for the way it was created. Pressing Atlanta midfielder Bartoz Slisz, Messi won possession, skipped past a defender, and coolly chipped Guzan to secure his place as the league’s standout performer.

The victory was sealed late on by Fafa Picault, who scored in the dying moments to give Miami their third win in four matches, keeping them atop the Eastern Conference standings early in the MLS season.
