MADRID: La Liga strugglers Levante have sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar after just two months in charge following their 5-0 thrashing against Real Madrid on Saturday.

“Levante’s board of directors have held an extraordinary meeting and decided to rescind the contract of Jose Luis Mendilibar,” said a statement on the club’s website on.

The 53-year-old Spaniard managed just one win in eight games in charge leaving the Valencian side second bottom of the table.

Mendilibar replaced Joaquin Caparros this season but failed to maintain the same level of play, with the team scoring a league-low four goals through eight rounds.

The club has not yet named a replacement for Mendilibar, who previously coached clubs including Osasuna, Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao.
