The new Premier League season is about to kick-off and I’ve got some thoughts. I’ve been looking at all the transfers, the squads. Honestly, this could be one hell of a season. Let me break down what I think will happen during the course of season 2025026.
Yeah, I’m a Chelsea fan, but I’m backing Liverpool to retain the title. I know they have lost quite a few starters and have a completely new fullback pairing. But here’s the thing: the spine is still intact, isn’t it?
The defending champions got Mo Salah, who’s still unstoppable, VVD commanding that defence, Alisson between the sticks, and Mac Allister pulling strings in the midfield. They are winners and they will be hungrier to keep winning. Plus, they’ve been spending serious money on big signings and are planning to bring in new centre-backs as well to sort out their problem in that department. Arne Slot has already proven that he is tactically astute and delivered the big trophy in his first season in the Premier League.
But here’s where it gets interesting: if they manage to add Isak to their impressive line-up. It’ll be a no-brainer to back them. That would be some signing. However, don’t expect it to be as easy as last season. This title race is going to be way closer.
Pep’s City are wounded, and that makes them dangerous. They’ve made some good additions too, but losing KDB is massive. The question is: Can Cherki or Foden fill in that void? We have to wait and see.
Then there’s the Rodri situation — he won’t be fit for the start of the season, so others will have to step up once again on his behalf. He was a huge miss last season. New signing Tijjani Reijnders will have to make an instant impact, which will be a big ask for a new signing, but he is capable of making a difference. Bernardo Silva is the newly appointed captain, who will also be looking to bounce back from a relatively poor last season.
Arsenal have finally got the missing piece in their puzzle — the striker. Gyokeres is exactly what they needed. So Arteta can’t have any more excuses, can he? Time for him to deliver!
I still think they will fall short once again in the title race. There’s just something about Arsenal that makes me think they will bottle it when it matters most. Call it a hunch!
Chelsea could surprise many this season. Those kids have gained that winning experience now, and that’s huge. But the goalkeeper and centre-back situation isn’t great. That’s why I don’t think they can actually win the title. They’ll compete, but will not be crowned champions.
After having a disastrous season last year — finishing in their worst position since the 1970s, when they got relegated — they have to be eager to prove a point.
The good news is, they’ll have only one game to concentrate on per week, plus they’ve made some good additions. Ruben Amorim will be under pressure, but they should be aiming for Europe; anything less would be a disaster. Their season will start with a game against Arsenal. It will be nothing less than a blockbuster.
Spurs, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Brighton, Everton, Nottingham Forest — they’ll all be fighting for those European places. The Premier League — most competitive league in the world — is going witness a battle that will go to the wire this season.
The managers of all the promoted teams will be under scrutiny, that’s obvious. Amorim will be under pressure at United, but Graham Potter? He has to get things right quickly or else he’ll lose the job. I’m calling it now — Potter’s walking the tightrope.
Everyone’s talking about Gyokeres, Sesko, Isak, Salah and some even mention Cole Palmer. Nah, I think it’ll be Haaland this time.
He’s still the best striker in the world. He scored 22 Premier League goals last season but it’s still deemed as average output, and there are strikers who are rated highly who won’t even score 20 PL goals consistently. That’s the standard Haaland has set.
There’s no KDB to serve him this time, but Haaland is a beast. He’ll be eager to score more this season to help City compete again. The man will deliver, mark my words.
Last year saw Nottingham Forest punching above their weight; they were expecting to finish in Champions League places but couldn’t sustain the momentum and finished seventh eventually.
This year? Everton under David Moyes could surprise a lot of us. He’s a top manager and they might push for European places under him. They’re making some shrewd signings too. Don’t sleep on them.
Last season, whoever got promoted went down. Simple as that. But this year, the promoted clubs are making an effort to survive, especially Sunderland with the signings they’re making. They’ve already spent £150 million and they’ve got a chance to survive.
What about Leeds and Burnley? Burnley are defensively stubborn under Scott Parker, who has previously taken clubs to the PL from the Championship but couldn’t survive. Could be the same story again.
Daniel Farke isn’t very popular among Leeds fans, and they’ll probably end up back in the Championship. So there’ll be a fight to avoid that one relegation spot between the promoted sides. Remember, the gap in quality between Premier League and Championship is huge.
It was a relief for Liverpool fans to see Mohammed Salah pen a two-year contract extension with Liverpool, ending a tiring saga. Can he produce another top season both in terms of goals and assists? In the Community Shield, we saw him involving less and Liverpool’s game was more inclined towards the left with Wirtz and Ekitike, but Salah will deliver once again. He has proven himself many times and he will continue to be fighting for the golden boot and playmaker award.
Look, football’s unpredictable, but these are my calls. Liverpool to retain the title in a much closer race, Haaland to win the Golden Boot again, and some proper drama in the relegation battle.
Can’t wait for it all to kick off. What do you reckon? Agree with my predictions or think I’m talking nonsense? Either way, it’s going to be a cracking season.
