The World Cup is over and I couldn't be more thrilled. Although I thought I was escaping the World Cup fever when I came to the United States for a vacation, I was in for a rude awakening.
I was looking forward to quality family time, instead the entire family was glued to the television set and hogging the remote.
I had to restrategise because I was outnumbered. Even my eight-year-old relative was constantly asking about the scores. Since I had no choice but to watch I started trying to find things I did like about the game.
First of all, I must admit, the vast majority of football players are extremely good- looking. I semi enjoyed the Spain versus Portugal game and as the Portuguese players wept after their loss, I couldn't help but feel bad for them. I wanted to give them all hugs and lollipops and pat them on the head for a job well done.
World leaders
Secondly, it was funny to see respected world leaders kicking back and having fun. Respected Archbishop of Africa Desmond Tutu wearing a South Africa beanie hat with a silly grin. I couldn't help but find that adorable. Bill Clinton was especially cute cheering for the US. Seeing him happy definitely put a smile on my face.
Last but not least, it was really funny to see football fans crying after they've lost. Again people, it's just a game. There are much sadder things in life than losing a world cup match. I feel like the world cup organisers should have complimentary psychologists on site to talk the fans out of their depression.
I wanted to write to Oprah and tell her to invite some of these fans on her show so she can put their pain into perspective. If you are upset about anything in the world, shouldn't it be the illegal occupation of Palestine, the widening gap between the rich and poor, or people dying of famine, Aids, and poverty in Africa?
But that's just my two cents. Hopefully the next four years will give football fans time to recover and get the necessary psychological treatment for their emotional losses.
