Dubai: President's Cup defending champions Al Ain were kicked out of the competition on Tuesday night following a 4-2 loss to 10-man Ajman on penalties.
Ajman, the bottom-placed side in the UAE Football League (UFL), upstaged their much fancied rivals via the tie-breaker after the match ended goalless at the end of extra time. Ajman were reduced to 10-men after Sameer Ebrahim was sent off in the 69th minute, but Al Ain failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and find the goal that would take them to the quarterfinals, which will be played on December 25 and 26.
Mohammad Saeed, Ali Khamis, Mohammad Amin Al Ajmi and Jasem Ali Mohammad scored for Ajman, while Shaab Ahmad, Jose Gustafo Sand and Ahmad Madhi converted for Al Ain. In Tuesday's other games, Yousuf Mousa's goal late in extra time helped Emirates beat Al Wasl 2-1. Nabeel Daoudi had put Emirates ahead with his 74th minute strike, but Panama hitman Blas Perez helped Al Wasl draw level when he converted an 81st-minute penalty. Mousa then struck in the 118th minute to keep the tie-breaker at bay.
4-0 drubbing
That night, Bashir Saeed fired a brace and Fernando Baiano and Andre Luisano Silva Pinga scored one goal each as Al Wahda handed Baniyas a 4-0 drubbing. Al Shabab booked their quarterfinal spot with 3-1 beating of Al Khaleej, with Adel Abdullah, Cristiano Florencio Pedrao and Carlos Villaneuva all scoring once. Aboubacer Camara reduced the arrears for the losers.
On December 25, Al Ahli and Dhafra will take on Al Shabab and Al Jazira, respectively, while Ajman will face UFL rivals Emirates in the first match on December 26.
Al Wahda will meet the winner of the Ittihad Kalba-Al Nasr tie, which was rescheduled to December 13 due to the death of Al Nasr striker Salem Sa'ad, in the last of the quarterfinal matches.
