Dubai: As Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, tributes poured in from across the cricketing world — led by Sachin Tendulkar, who recalled an emotional moment from his farewell match in 2013.

Posting on X, Tendulkar wrote: “As you retire from Tests, I’m reminded of your thoughtful gesture 12 years ago, during my last Test. You offered to gift me a thread from your late father. It was something too personal for me to accept, but the gesture was heartwarming and has stayed with me ever since.

“Your true legacy, Virat, lies in inspiring countless young cricketers to pick up the sport... You’ve given Indian cricket so much more than just runs.”

Kohli, who debuted in 2011, retires as India’s most successful Test captain with 40 wins from 68 matches. Only Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh have more.

‘A man with lion’s passion’

Current coach Gautam Gambhir called him “a man with lion’s passion,” while Sanjay Manjrekar said:

“Biggest brand of the modern cricket era who gave it all for cricket’s oldest format.”

Navjot Singh Sidhu described him as “the greatest Indian cricketer of all time,” and AB de Villiers called Kohli a “true legend,” adding: “Your determination and skill have always inspired me.”

Yuvraj Singh praised Kohli’s fighting spirit:

“You played the way greats do — with hunger in your heart, fire in your belly and pride in every stride.”

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who debuted under Kohli’s captaincy, said:

“Your passion and energy will be missed, but your legacy remains unmatched.”

Ravi Shastri, who coached India during Kohli’s tenure, called him a “modern-day giant” and “a fantastic ambassador for Test cricket.”

Sehwag remembers special talent

Rishabh Pant thanked Kohli for his intensity and guidance, while Virender Sehwag said:

“From the time I saw you, I knew you were special. The passion with which you played was a joy to watch.”

Kohli led India to several historic milestones — including their first-ever Test series win in Australia in 2018–19. The BCCI is expected to name India’s squad for the upcoming England series next week, with the first Test starting June 20 in Leeds.
