Dubai: Speculation around Sanju Samson's future in the Indian Premier League has intensified in recent days. Just a day ago, it seemed likely that Samson would continue with the Rajasthan Royals, where he currently serves as captain. However, fresh reports from Indian media suggest that Samson has formally requested the franchise to release him ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

This unexpected development puts Rajasthan Royals in a difficult position. They now have to decide whether to honour Samson’s request and release him into the auction pool or explore the possibility of a trade. Having retained him before the last major auction, the Royals hold the contractual rights to keep him for the next two seasons under the three-year agreement sanctioned by IPL regulations. If they choose to enforce the contract, Samson will have to remain with the franchise.

The final call is expected to be made in consultation with Rajasthan head coach Rahul Dravid and have until the IPL retention deadline in November to make a decision.

Samson's potential availability has already caught the attention of other franchises. Chennai Super Kings, who have previously shown indirect interest, are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. Kolkata Knight Riders are also said to be keen on acquiring the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter.

According to sources, unless Rajasthan and Chennai can strike a deal, Samson entering the auction looks increasingly likely.

Currently, it is learnt that Samson is training at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as part of a routine programme for a select group of players shortlisted by the national selectors. He is expected to feature in the upcoming Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE on September 9. Before that, he’ll turn out for the Kochi Blue Tigers in the Kerala Cricket League.
