European football in pictures: Manchester United crush City in Premier League

Manchester United completed their first home and away Premier League double over Manchester City since the Alex Ferguson era with goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay giving them a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United's triumph over second-placed City leaves runaway leaders Liverpool, who have a 25-point advantage, even closer to the title but not even that bitter-sweet element of the win could dampen the celebrations in the Stretford End.

Liverpool now require only two more wins to guarantee lifting their first league title for 30 years and may not even need those six points if City fail to beat Arsenal and Burnley in their upcoming games before the Merseyside derby.

United may have had to defend for large parts of the second half but they were disciplined throughout and allowed City few clear chances after taking the lead in the 30th minute through Martial after a clever free-kick from Bruno Fernandes.

The arrival of Portuguese midfielder Fernandes in late January has transformed United's season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's improving side are now unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions.

What a difference a week has made for Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as his side cemented their place in the top four with a swaggering 4-0 rout of Everton. Just eight days ago, the Blues needed a late equaliser just to escape with a draw at lowly Bournemouth - a dispiriting result on the back of their Champions League last 16 first leg humiliation against Bayern Munich. For the first time in his reign, the critics were sharpening their knives for Lampard after a run of five wins in 16 Premier League games. But Tuesday's FA Cup fifth round win over Liverpool lifted the mood at just the right time and Chelsea followed that with an even more emphatic result against Everton.

Real Madrid's response to winning the Clasico was another surprise defeat on Sunday as they lost 2-1 away at Real Betis to hand the initiative straight back to Barcelona. Betis were deserving victors of a thrilling contest at the Benito Villamarin where two galling Madrid errors cost them their place at the top of La Liga, with Barca now two points clear.

A heavy touch from Sergio Ramos led to Sidnei's stunning opener for Betis and then Karim Benzema, who equalised with a penalty on the stroke of half-time, was at fault for their 82nd-minute winner.

Benzema's misplaced pass in midfield allowed Cristian Tello to go clear and he held his nerve to give Betis their first victory in eight games that adds yet another twist to this season's back-and-forth title race.
