Photos: World leaders offer condolences to Indian Prime Minister Modi over demise of his mother

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the last rites of his mother Heeraben Modi in Gandhinagar on Friday morning at the age of 100. Heeraben passed away at the UN Mehta hospital in Ahmedabad. She was hospitalised on Wednesday after her health deteriorated. Modi who reached Gujarat this morning first paid tribute to his mother at her Raysan residence and then carried her mortal remains to the crematorium for the last rites. Informing about his mother’s death, Modi tweeted, “A glorious century rests at the feet of God... Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was one of the first world leaders to offer condolences to Modi over the passing away of his mother. Kishida tweeted, “PM Modi @narendramodi, I would like to express my deepest condolences for the passing of your beloved mother. May her soul rest in peace.”

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday offered his condolences. Shehbaz Sharif tweeted, “There is no greater loss than losing one’s mother. My condolences to Prime Minister @narendramodi on the passing away of his mother.”

Former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa condoled the death of Modi’s mother. He tweeted, “Deeply saddened to hear of the demise of Smt. Heeraben Modi. My heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister @narendramodi ji on the loss of his beloved mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with the PM and his family in this hour of grief.”

Bollywood celebrities too mourned the demise of Modi’s mother. Taking to Twitter actor Ajay Devgn shared a picture and wrote: “My heartfelt condolences on the passing of Smt. Heeraben Modi. A simple, principled lady, she raised a fine son in our PM Shri Narendra Modiji. Shanti My personal condolences to our PM and his family.”

Actor Akshay Kumar tweeted in Hindi, “Maa ko khone se bada dukh koi nahi. Bhagwan apko is dukh ko sehne ki Shakti de @narendramodi ji om shanti.”

Punjabi actor Shehnaaz Gill shared a couple of pictures and tweeted, "My deepest condolences to Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi on the sad demise of his beloved mother, Smt. Heeraben Modi There is nothing as priceless & indescribable in God's creation as the bond between mother & child. Om shanti!."
