From Al Fahidi Fort in Dubai to the Great Sphinx of Giza, here are monuments that made it on to currency notes

Have you looked at your currency lately? Check out those notes – often you’ll find a monument on a bill that’s close to a country’s heart. Here’s a look at some special structures we found on currency notes and coins from across the world

First up, UAE. The Dh100 note features the Al Fahidi Fort in Dubai, which is over 200 years old. The Al Fahidi Fort was built in 1787 and served as the headquarters for the Ruler of the emirate. It was restored during the reign of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Today it's home to the Dubai Museum.

Saudi Arabia’s 100 riyal note also has a building of note. It’s the Green Dome atop the Prophet's (PBUH) Mosque in Medina.

In Egypt, the 100 pound note showcases the Great Sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a person. The world-famous sculpture stands tall amid dunes and pyramids as it has done since 2500 BC.

Canada remembers its soldiers and their valiance through its $20 note, which features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France that was built during the First World War.

The aptly named Independence Hall in Philadelphia is the building where the US’s declaration of independence was signed. It’s also the spot the country’s constitution was adopted. Located on the premises of a historical part, the hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

India’s purple-hued Rs100 note frames the image of an 11th century stepwell, called Rani ki Vav (the queen's stepwell), located in Patan, Gujarat. It too bears the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pakistan celebrates education on its rupees 1,000 note; Islamia College Peshawar, one of the country’s oldest institutions, is a key feature.

The Barasoain Church, which was completed in 1888 is a stunning example of the Baroque architecture in Spanish structures built in the Philippines. The well-preserved Church is located about 40km away from the country’s capital, Manila.

Uji, a small town that borders Kyoto, in Japan, is home to the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin monastery, which features on the ten yen coin. When visiting this little town, with its cobbled lanes and picturesque vistas, try its matcha confectionery – it’s famous for it.
