As many as 56 nominees from 20 countries across six continents battled it out for the 2023 International Emmy Awards that were announced in New York on Monday night. The award for Best Drama Series went to Netflix’s 'The Empress, Sommerhaus Serien' (Germany) that tells the love story between Austrian-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth von Wittelsbach.

The tightest race was perhaps for the Best Actress category. Karla Souza took home the trophy for in 'La Caída' (Dive), Amazon’s Mexican sports drama. She pipped Indian actress Shefali Shah who was nominated for season two of Netflix’s 'Delhi Crime'. Other nominees included Connie Nielsen ('Becoming Karen Blixen') and Billie Piper ('I Hate Suzie Too').

Martin Freeman took home the Best Performance by an Actor award for his role in the BBC drama, 'The Responder' (UK). Freeman plays a morally compromised policeman working the nights as a first responder on Liverpool’s streets.

Jim Sarbh, who was nominated in this category for his role in 'Rocket Boys', took to Instagram to post: “No luck”. 'Rocket Boys' chronicled the lives of Homi J Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai, two Indian scientists who shaped crucial moments in Indian nuclear and space history. Argentine actor Gustavo Bassani (Yosi, the Regretful Spy) and Swedish actor Jonas Karlsson (Riding in Darkness) were the other nominees.

Netflix grabbed two awards for Best Comedy — its Northern Irish hit, 'Derry Girls', and 'Vir Das: Landing', a stand-up special from one of India’s top comedians.

Ektaa R Kapoor, co-founder of Indian TV production powerhouse Balaji Telefilms, was honoured with the 2023 International Emmy Directorate Award, which highlights excellence among C-suite executives.
