GAZA RESOLUTION A WELCOME STEP: The UN Security Council, after overcoming challenges to avoid a potential US veto, has passed a resolution urging increased humanitarian assistance for Gaza. The resolution emphasises the need for "safe, unhindered, and expanded humanitarian access" to Gaza and lays the groundwork for a sustainable cessation of fighting. Although toned down from initial drafts, which called for an immediate end to the 11-week war and reduced Israeli control over aid deliveries, the resolution gained approval with the US, Israel's primary ally, choosing to abstain. Penned by the UAE, the resolution reflects extensive consultations and engagement among Council members and concerned parties, addressing the urgent humanitarian situation in Gaza while prioritising the protection of those delivering lifesaving aid.
