HEAT-RELATED DEATHS MAY SKYROCKET WITHOUT CLIMATE ACTION: A cautionary report released recently warns of a potential 4.7-fold surge in heat-related deaths by mid-century if various governments continue to neglect global warming. The annual Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report outlines a trajectory of 2.7°C (4.86°F) of global heating by 2100 unless immediate actions are taken to reduce emissions. Unprecedented in its scope, the report projects the growing risks to population health if the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is missed, emphasising the urgency for intervention. Highlighting the alarming trend, 2023 is anticipated to become Earth's hottest year ever recorded, continuing an eight-year streak of record warmth. This underscores the critical necessity for prompt and resolute measures to address the imminent threats posed by climate change. (By Sadiq Shaban, Opinion Editor)
