RENEWED CONFIDENCE: The registration of China’s Sinopharm vaccine by the UAE yesterday was a much-awaited move as it signals a vote of confidence in its safety and efficacy by the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The news has infused a new vigor in the combat against the coronavirus, with residents looking forward to details on when and how it will become available to the public. However, at this juncture, it is important to remember that we cannot afford to become lax. BACK TO BASICS CAN REDUCE US COVID-19 FACILITIES: The US has reported more than 3,000 new COVID-19 fatalities, just a week after breaking a daily record for pandemic-related deaths. It is evidence that the coronavirus continues to ravage the population as many parts of the world are hoping to return to normal life. The vaccine has been rolled out in the UK and it will soon be given the go-ahead in the US too. But the task ahead is not going to be easy. Distribution of the vaccine to those who need it the most requires coordination of the highest level. Till then the US must go back to the basics - encouraging the people to wear masks and follow social distancing in order to reduce the number of fatalities. SPORTING WORLD LAMENTS DEATH OF PAOLO ROSSI: Still reeling from the death of Diego Maradona late last month, the footballing fraternity is coming to terms with another huge loss as Italian great Paolo Rossi has passed away at the age of 64. News emerged of the death of Italy’s goalscoring hero from their victorious 1982 World Cup campaign early on Thursday. ‘Pablito’ as he was affectionately known, died of an “incurable disease” according to RAI Sport, where he was working as a TV pundit. Christmas this year won’t be the same for many people around the world; even the Kardashians and Jenners have had to change plans. The celebrity icons have said they’re scrapping their annual Christmas bash for the first time in 40 years. In 2019, Kourtney Kardashian hosted the gathering, which cost an estimated $440,000, according to People. Apart from being the logical thing to do, the cancellation is a good PR move for the family, considering the backlash Kim Kardashian got for having a lavish 40th birthday party on an island.
