The uncertainty of the direction of events in Syria is dangerous. The ramifications of such an uncertainty are grave, especially if the final outcome leads to all-out war. Syria cannot afford a state of disintegration or a continued phase of uncertainty.

Given the recent developments at the UN Security Council with regard to Syria, it is important to emphasise that the integrity and unity of the country is ensured. There is a danger that Syria will fall victim to fragmentation along sectarian, political and religious lines. This is serious and could lead to the break-up not only of the nation, but of the people as well. It is therefore critical that the current impasse is brought to an end. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect is the consistent daily toll of those killed in clashes with the security forces. The army, police and militias have been targeting civilians regardless of their age or gender and the number of children killed is shocking as it has become evident that security personnel are following a policy of shoot to kill. The situation in Syria is at a crucial point and an all-out conflict should be avoided at all costs.
