Power cuts have left Sharjah reeling and the suffering of the people, in this time of extreme summer temperatures, has increased manifold.

Sadly the situation is a repeat of what happened in May. This time the power outages are lasting for as long as eight hours, leaving frustrated and desperate residents scrambling to take remedial measures. To add to their woes, the shortfalls are taking place without prior warning.

At times like this the onus falls on the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority to provide its customers with an appropriate and professional response to the situation. This is the first step to take since Sharjah's residents are entitled to basic civic amenities — electricity and water being foremost among them.

The recurring power failures have affected businesses, banks and, more importantly, important emergency services provided by hospitals and clinics.

Children are among the first to be distressed thanks to the excessive heat.
