Reports of children as young as 12 falling prey to drugs are shocking and immediate remedial action is needed to curb the menace. A recent case in Sharjah of two brothers found to be in possession of Tramadol drives home the point that children are vulnerable to such ills in society, especially when they do not receive support and care at home from parents.

Another report published recently said that drug traffickers are using innovative ways to push drugs so that children begin abusing these substances even before they are in their teens. The report by the Ministry of Interior had also said that nearly 40 per cent of illegal drugs are being sold in the region.

The onus of tackling this menace lies not only with the authorities but on all who live in society. The family home is the first place where children must be taught the importance of communication and healthy living. Often neglect at home and the inability to lend a ear to their concerns leads to children going astray. Schools too must take a pro-active role in teaching children not to experiment with things given to them by friends.
