Too many motorists seem to think that an amber traffic light is a signal to speed up
The amber traffic light serves as a warning that the signal is about to turn red and motorists should safely slow down and prepare to stop.
It is not a signal to race towards the intersection in a dangerous effort to get across the road before the light turns red. This habit puts even those who try to adhere to the rules of the road at risk, as those who stop at the amber light often face abuse from those who are less respectful of the law, or the danger of being rear-ended.
Traffic officials have warned that there are only seconds between the amber and red signals and anybody caught in the intersection when the lights turn red can be fined.
Of greater concern than the legal punishment is the fact that the mad dash through the crossing threatens the lives and safety of drivers and pedestrians.
