Dr Hafeel Ambalath, Ayurvedic Practitioner, Founder and CEO, The Healers’ Clinic provides an Ayurvedic approach to dieting for various conditions
Fatty liver, a condition where too much fat is stored in the organ, eventually affects its proper functioning and leads to inflammation. Fatty liver is also linked to metabolic disorders such as diabetes, increased abdominal fat, high blood pressure and triglycerides, a type of fat.
A vegetarian diet is advised to support the liver. Keep away from red meat and fat. Avoid alcohol and overindulgence.
Bitter-tasting vegetables are highly advisable in improving the quality of the liver. This includes vegetables such as bitter melon, moringa and Brussels sprout. Green juices made out of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) with celery and green apple is a combination we recommend.
Fruits that are not high in sugar have to be a regular part of your diet. Grape fruit, papaya and avocado are good choices. Add garlic to your dishes as it helps to regulate the fire in the liver and reduce further fat accumulation in the long run.
Daily complete bowel movement has to be ensured. Any food that causes constipation and bloating has to be avoided. If bloating and constipation persist, consult a qualified practitioner.
Moderate exercise and a low glucose and fatty diet are key to supporting liver functions. Self-medication and supplements have to be chosen wisely, even if they are herbal.
Eating outside and having stomach trouble are usually associated with artificial sauces, flavouring agents, improper cooking, white flour and excessive sugar. The best way to avoid it is to carefully choose the restaurant and dish. He may also have increased sensitivity, which needs time to heal. Avoid spicy, oily and fatty food and milk for sometime.
Monitor sugar intake. Serve more of cooked food and avoid leafy salads. Give fruits that are not sour. Make sure he drinks water often during daytime. Chewing food and avoiding rushing through will ensure a smooth digestion.
