House of Nabrman: Abaya redefined

Bespoke and glamorous, Nabrman's fashion show on Saturday was the world's highest fashion show — on the 122nd floor of Burj Khalifa. The event, held at AtMosphere, showcased abayas by designer Hend Al Mutawa from the House of Nabrman. Unlike other fashion shows, models meandered among the guests showing off the label's latest autumn-winter collection.

With the use of stud- and pearl-embroidered shoulders Nabrman introduced bold new cuts and silhouettes.

"I have incorporated international trends in these abayas. For example, the studs used in some of the abayas are trending internationally now," said Hend. "I am always on the look out for designs and materials that will make my abayas look futuristic. I have tried to set a new trend in abaya fashion by introducing the big-holed net material in this collection"

She said she was inspired by the sea. "[It] is much classier than my previous spring-summer collection, which was hip. With pearls, metallic edges and long flowing robes this one is a very sophisticated collection."

Hend was recently tasked with creating an abaya for reality star Kim Kardashian during her visit to the UAE.

"Dressing her up was amazing. I had been preparing the collection for quite some time and when I heard she was coming I tried to prepare a few pieces that she would like given her love for crystals. The abaya I designed for her was very light and replete with crystals. It was an amazing experience.

"I love it when non-Emirati women wear abayas," she added. "A lot of those whom I have met personally wore it because they have immense respect for our culture."

Open to only a few select invitees, the show received an enthusiastic response from those present, mostly Emiratis.

"I love the way she has incorporated soft designs with an edgy rock ‘n' roll," said Fatima Al Bannar. Other, like Maryam Al Muhairi, were impressed by the venue and setting: "It's amazing to attend the show this high up in Burj Khalifa. I loved her soft and flowing designs," she said.
