Head over heels: The best hats to wear for the Dubai World Cup

Not a fan of hats, fascinators or head dresses? You will be after a visit to this year's International Milliners Showcase at BurJuman.

A spectacular collection of headwear and accessories ahead of the Dubai World Cup this weekend, the exhibition features milliners from all over the world.

Subtle and understated they are not - and neither are their creations. "Dubai is such a flamboyant place and the pieces have to represent the same," said milliner-to-the-stars Louise Macdonald.

"Where Ascot is often seen as slightly more understated and classic, the Dubai World Cup is about fun and colour. Creating pieces for this market is just fun. It's also a challenge designing for a city which houses so many different cultures. Everybody wants something different and it keeps things exciting."

A milliner for 17 years, Macdonald began her career in England making hats for film and television productions.

Working in one of London's best costume houses, she produced headwear for world-famous actors to complement their movie roles, including a bowler hat for Tom Cruise's role in Far and Away and a bonnet for Minnie Driver in a television series she appeared in before she hit the big time.

Macdonald gives her top tips when buying a hat:

* If you're heading out to buy a hat or fascinator to match an outfit, remember to take your outfit with you.
* Go for bright colours with a bit of sparkle as this will instantly give you a look which works for both day and night.
* Keep things simple.
* Make an effort and be critical. Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself.
* Be realistic about your own skin tones and colours and wear things which suit you.
* If you really don't have time to sort anything out until the last minute, go for simple and comfortable. The International Milliners Showcase includes Phillip Wright, Louise Macdonald, Marilena Romeo, Valerie Corona and Celine Robinson. Hats off to men

Philip Wright, of Walter Wright, has the modern man in mind. Wright thinks it's about time the men were included in the hat fun by creating a line of classic and funky trilbies.

"At last year's event I wore a black and white striped trilby and was amazed at the number of men who commented.

"I thought it was about time the guys were looked after too and added the hats as part of my collection.

"They are fun and funky and I'm certain any man entering the Style Stakes for the Best Dressed Couple will improve his chances of winning with one of these."

Priced at Dh600, the hats are available at The Observatory, BurJuman, until Saturday.
