Abu Dhabi: Television has a large impact on the values of our society. Nashwa Al Rweinin, executive and managing director of Peramedia for art production company put a large blame for degeneration of values on the media.
"Cultural programmes are not favoured by TV producers because they don't generate revenue. They prefer singing and dancing programmes," she said at the Family Role in Modern Society Conference that took place yesterday.
"Most TV series are generating new values that are destructive to the society. TV producer Al Rweinin warned against the "reality" series where a group of young people live together to participate in singing and dancing competitions.
This type of show that largely impacts on young people and generations, do not reflect the style of life in our society. A study on university students in Lebanon showed that 65 per cent loved the behaviour of this group, 13 per cent admired their hairstyle while 12 per cent were fans of their dress.
Another study showed that people watch 642 TV channels in the Arab world; most of them private channels. A study across the Arab World showed that 15 per cent watch five hours per day, 35 per cent watch between three to five hours, 40 per cent watch one hour and ten per cent watch less than one hour.
A study on Emiratis in the UAE showed that 78 per cent watch the news, 12 per cent watch movies and ten per cent watch sports.
