Community event attended by over 250 distinguished guests
The Sri Lanka Business Council UAE, in collaboration with the Embassy and Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai, hosted a remarkable Iftar gathering on March 7, 2025, at Crowne Plaza Deira, attended by over 250 distinguished guests, including members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, and representatives of various Sri Lankan professional organizations. The evening was a shining example of unity in diversity, bringing together people from multiple ethnicities, faiths, and nationalities.
In his welcome address, Suren Swaminathan, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Business Council UAE, set the tone for the evening, recalling his own upbringing in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, where as children, people of all religions — Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims — celebrated each other's festivals together.
He reminded the gathering that diversity is not a challenge but a national asset.
Swaminathan also touched upon the visionary leadership of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who declared 2025 as The Year of the Community, urging societies to strengthen bonds across communities. He said that Sri Lanka, too, under the guidance of its new leadership, is recognizing the importance of inclusivity and diversity, with plans for a National Diversity Celebration Week aimed at fostering unity and reconciliation.
“Our shared humanity is what binds us,” Swaminathan said. “Celebrating diversity is not only the way forward but essential to building a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive society.”
The gathering was enriched by inspiring addresses from spiritual and community leaders:
Ven. Muditha Vihari Thero emphasised the virtues of fasting within Buddhism, explaining how self-restraint, compassion, and mindfulness are central tenets that resonate across all faiths. He beautifully drew parallels between Buddhist teachings and the practice of fasting in Islam, highlighting Ahimsa (non-violence), equality, and respect for all living beings. He praised the Business Council for creating a space where such interfaith harmony could be celebrated.
Rev. Fr. Clarence Roy reflected on the rare moment when Christians and Muslims are fasting simultaneously, underlining the shared values of self-sacrifice, compassion, and giving. He emphasized that fasting is not merely an act of abstinence but a reminder to care for those in need, resonating with the call for charity and humility in both faiths.
Vicks Vigneswaran provided a civilian and philosophical perspective, sharing memories of his parents and elders who taught him the value of fasting as part of yogic discipline and spiritual growth. He reminded the audience that fasting teaches us control over our desires, compassion for others, and spiritual awakening, values that transcend religious lines.
Riza Mohammed spoke movingly of his personal experiences growing up in a Muslim household, sharing nostalgic reflections on the spiritual and communal significance of Ramadan. He spoke about the discipline fasting teaches, and how Ramadan is a time of reflection, self-improvement, and deep connection to God and family. His words resonated with many in the audience, evoking memories of shared community traditions.
Alexi Gunasekara, Consul General of Sri Lanka to Dubai and Northern Emirates, reflected on how his time in the UAE deepened his understanding of fasting, beyond its religious dimension, as a practice that teaches empathy, humility, and discipline. He acknowledged that while Sri Lanka celebrates fasting traditions, it was only in the multicultural environment of the UAE that he fully appreciated its universal message of compassion and sacrifice.
The event was further honoured by the presence of Hon. Thakshila Arnold, Charge d’Affaires of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, who expressed her appreciation to the Sri Lanka Business Council for organising an event that truly reflected the country's multicultural heritage and unity in diversity.
The evening opened with a beautiful Qirath recitation by young Atheeq Sharief, and was expertly emceed by Lakna Godahena, who gracefully kept the program engaging. Vice Chairman Shihan Sherief delivered the closing thank-you note, acknowledging all the participants, sponsors, and guests.
Adding an interactive element, Nakshitha Naseer led a lively quiz competition, with prizes generously sponsored by Cotton Collection, Envoy, Thushanis Restaurant, Heartland Trading, and Basilur Tea.
Bringing Sri Lankan flavor and hospitality to the event, Basilur Tea set up a special tea station, offering a variety of tea blends, while Naturals served refreshing natural Sri Lankan ice creams, which were a highlight of the evening. Each guest was presented with a beautifully curated gift bag featuring products from Siddhalepa, Maliban, Kothu Me, and Basilur Tea, adding a thoughtful touch to the event.
The main sponsor for this event was Shiraj Finance, whose generous support was pivotal in making the evening possible.
In conclusion, Swaminathan’s message was clear:
“Whether in Sri Lanka or here in the UAE, let us embrace and celebrate our diversity as a strength, not a barrier. Through understanding and respect, we can build lasting friendships, stronger communities, and a better future for all.”
The Iftar was widely appreciated by all attendees as a resounding success, reinforcing the belief that diverse communities can thrive together when guided by mutual respect and shared values.
