Explosion of prints, bling bonanza underline summer spirit on the opening day
Dubai: The opening day of the Dubai Fashion Week Spring Summer 2010 on Sunday was layered with the usual predictable notes.
If Beirut-born designer Walid Atallah unleashed a bling bonanza on the runway, the Brazilian designers of the Barbara Bela label opted for a more stylish route with their deep blue gowns and ruffled dresses. The riot of colours and the explosion of prints on the runway underlined the summer spirit.
Unfortunately, the first show from the Brazilian designers saw a poor audience turn out. Fortunately, the creations were a contrast to the meager crowd.
"I am happy about showcasing my collection for the first time in Dubai but I wish there were more people in the audience. I was a bit disappointed," says Georgiana Mascarenhas – the designer of Barbara Bela. She expressed her misgivings after she wrapped up her show.
Meanwhile, Mariam Al Mazro of Mimi Fashion Designs received tremendous crowd support. Her flowing kaftans were a hit among the audience. Mixing prints - geometrical, floral and everything in between - and spraying it on chiffons and silk found many takers.
"This is what I do best," was Mariam’s succinct response after the show. Indian designers Aartivijay Gupta and Babita M also played the summer theme by injecting a string of floral corsages and ruffles.
Saving the best for the last, Walid Atallah garnered maximum crowd support. Though many found it a tad predictable, his 35 plus collection unveiled some ethereal wedding gowns.
"He knows what his clients want and he is really good at making such elaborate haute couture gowns. It’s perfect for a bridal princess," says Manal Mohammad Ali, a self-titled fashion follower.
More than 33 designers will be showcasing their collections in the next four days.
