Get ready as Gulf News' Radio 1 throws the party of the year
Gulf News' Radio 1 is organising an event like no other on Saturday at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.
With performances by Kelly Rowland, Karl Wolf and Abri, Radio 1 LIVE is set to be a hot night.
Support acts include the UAE's leading club brands and DJs: Deep Night, Real Flava, Smooth Grooves, Zinc and Club Fresh will unite to showcase their weekly nights to create the ultimate club-hopping experience.
Radio 1's Simon Schooly said: "This event is everything that Radio 1 is about. There is nothing about this event that doesn't speak Radio 1, the artists and DJ's make up the staple diet of our play list, so this is very much a personal event for us and is the perfect way to say a sincere ‘thank you' to all Radio 1 listeners. This event is everything in one night - the complete party. Everyone involved is very excited and I know this is going to be an event that will be remembered for years to come. Just come dressed to sweat."
Ms Kelly Rowland
Headlining Radio 1 LIVE is Grammy award-winner Kelly Rowland, who rose to fame as one third of super-group Destiny's Child.
The multi Grammy Award-winning trio, made up of Rowland, Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams, is the best-selling female r'n'b group of all time.
Rowland has enjoyed a similarly successful solo career to date with two popular albums Simply Deep, featuring the hit singles Stole and Dilemma (her hit collaboration with Nelly), and Ms Kelly.
The latter was released recently and has spawned the hits Like This and Work, which are enjoying constant rotation on radio stations around the UAE.
Karl Wolf bites the bullet
Lebanese-born r'n'b singer Karl Wolf, who is based in Montreal, Canada, grew up in Sharjah and is happy to be back home in the UAE.
He's been relaxing on the beach and soaking up the sun since his return and is avoiding the club scene before the show. "I'm not going out too much. I need my stamina for the concert," he said.
Wolf, who is celebrating his birthday on Friday, said he's excited about the concert. "It's very cool. The fact that there is going to be so many people in the audience, that's exciting. And it's going to be a full hour show, which is cool so I can play all the songs from my new album," said Wolf.
That album, Bite The Bullet (EMI), was released recently around the world with the successful first single Africa - a remix of Toto's 1989 song.
His second single, She Wants To Know, is being played continuously on Dubai radio stations. He's now getting ready to release an album in Japan, which will be a combination of the best songs from his debut album, Face Behind The Face, and Bite The Bullet.
Wolf will be joined onstage by Bahamian dancehall artist Culture, who featured on Africa, and Charbeezy on the darbuka. Dany Neville is set to spin the decks as the support DJ.
"My show is energetic, there's excitement, constant movement and action," said Wolf. "The show will have lots of surprises and I'll change it up a bit. It'll never sound exactly like the album. And Africa will kill the crowd," he said.
After this performance, Wolf is going to Prague, Czech Republic, to perform on X-Factor and then on to Japan at end of July. "I'm looking forward to that," he said. "It's going to be exciting."
But before he leaves Dubai, the singer is throwing an after party at Boudoir, Dubai Marine Club, and hinted that he'll most likely perform one or two of his new songs.
Abri's surprise
Since the release of their debut album Sunchild, Dubai-based group Abri has enjoyed a string of successful performances. They have appeared at some major events, including the Dubai Desert Rhythm Festival and the Formula 1 event in Bahrain recently.
Lead singer Hamdan Al Abri said the show on Saturday will be great for the group: "This gig is so huge for us, especially after our songs have been playing on the radio."
And they plan to give the audience a little surprise too. "We wanna try out a new song. See what people think about it. We're going to have a new intro to our show - a little more funky," said Hamdan. And the name of this new song? "It's called Number 2," Hamdan laughed. "We haven't come up with a name yet. So we'll see what the audience thinks of it," he said.
Even with their drummer Andre Atherley overseas at the moment, the group is already working on a new album and have drummer Rony Afif filling in for Andre until he returns.
