Let’s face it, a honeymoon should be more than the sequel to your wedding. While Netflix and chill remains top of the list for GCC brides, it turns couples also want to be able to write their origin stories in places that feel uniquely their own. In other words, everyone wants their own personalised experience of life on The White Lotus/Shogun/pick your all-time favourite binge-watch classic.

That means there’s much more variety on offer in terms of honeymoon destinations. After all, late-stage travel capitalism has made sure everyone has already been to Paris and Petra.

But once a destination has been locked down, many couples also want to do as much as possible over a seven-to-ten-day period – all with what seems to be a goal of building as many different core relationship memories as possible.

“Couples increasingly want to make the most of their trip, whether it’s a week-long island retreat or a multi-stop cultural itinerary, ensuring their honeymoon feels meaningful, unhurried, and tailored to their shared interests,” says Matthew Vlemmiks, leisure manager at dnata Travel, which offers a broad range of tailored honeymoon packages designed with GCC clients in mind.

The majority of honeymooners now want five-star hotel stays, with many also asking for unique accommodation that reflects their desire for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Vlemmiks cites the example of igloos and glass-ceiling rooms in Finland to view the Northern Lights and traditional ryokans in Japan that put honeymooners up close to the local culture (did we say Shogun?).

That ties into the research: “The rise of social media has influenced honeymoon travel trends, with couples seeking Instagram-worthy destinations and immersive activities to share with their online communities, driving further demand for curated honeymoon experiences and bespoke travel services,” a December report from analytics firm Infinity Business Insights says.

Depending on the operator or hotel – and on your budget – you should be able to book optional add-ons such as videographers for private shoots, Arabic-speaking guides, visa assistance and travel insurance, as well as luxury car rentals or, at the top end, private yacht charters, helicopter transfers and fine dining at Michelin-starred restaurants.

Some properties, such as the Rosewood Amsterdam, don’t do packages; as a hotel spokesperson emphasises, every stay is tailored to individual guests.

Overall, destinations big on culture and those close to nature are trending, and it seems couples aren’t hesitating to prioritise value for money with short-haul honeymoons. Just as long as they can have a digital detox – except for that hashtag-heavy post, of course.

So here is a curated list of options for all tastes and budgets. Remember, rates are indicative and can fluctuate based on factors such as travel dates, specific accommodations, flights, exclusivity and other inclusions.

Tailored tranquility – Zanzibar: Sleep, silk sheets, and room service: The real honeymoon glow-up is doing absolutely nothing. That’s central to the experience at Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa. There are no off-the-rack packages here. Personalized touches can extend to private dinners on the beach, embroidered kitenge robes, a floating breakfast in your private pool and even exclusive cave swimming excursions. Each beachfront one-bedroom villa comes with 1500 sqm of private space, direct access to the beach, a private rooftop terrace with ocean views, an outdoor bathtub under the African stars, a dedicated butler – and customised spa treatments for stays longer than four nights. There are also in-villa shisha options at this property, which is well-versed in catering to Middle Eastern tastes – including privacy, personalised service and halal dining. Prices start at $2,200 per night for a beachfront villa on half-board basis. Whitesandvillas.com
Alpine affair – Graubünden: With Switzerland trending on honeymoon lists again, Graubünden, the alpine nation’s largest and most scenic canton is pulling out all the stops for GCC couples. Many top hotels offer curated experiences tailored to Middle Eastern guests looking for luxury, wellness and romance – with Arabic-speaking staff, halal dining options, and privacy-focused amenities. The Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, for example, offers panoramic mountain views from designer suites, rides up and down the hotel’s private mountain railway and treatments at its Tschuggen Bergoase Spa. A three-night stay with spa access and gourmet dining starts from CHF 3,500. Or at the top end, make a helicopter transfer to the 7132 Hotel in Vals. Accommodation in a penthouse suite with signature Valser hot stone treatments at the historic thermal baths will set you back CHF 10,000. As the hotel puts it, it’s the beginning of forever, framed by Swiss elegance and the serenity of the Alps. Graubuenden.ch
Rippling romance - The Maldives: With endless turquoise horizons and soft powdery beaches, it’s no wonder the Maldives is honeymoon central. And what sets the private lagoon resort of Sirru Fen Fushi apart is how quiet it is – the kind of place where you have an eternity to discover each other. For GCC couples looking beyond the usual post-wedding trappings, the property has packages tailored to our cultural sensibilities, including halal dining options and gender-segregated events (when you need to tear yourselves away from each other). Packages include a welcome F&B basket, followed by a romantic turndown with artfully arranged petals and candlelight. Expect pricing from $8,000 to $50,000 for seven nights. A top-tier honeymoon package includes an overwater villa, personalized butler service, bespoke spa treatments and private excursions like sunset cruises. Or push the boat out with traditional private candle-lit dinners by the beach and exclusive access to a private island for a day. Sirrufenfushi.com
Canalside charm - Amsterdam: Amsterdam wears its storied history lightly, with plenty of room for cosy intimacy - the perfect getaway for lovers of art, culture and contemporary flair. The Rosewood Amsterdam, the city’s newest luxury address – it opened on 1 May – occupies the former Palace of Justice on the vibrant Prinsengracht. Rooms at this meticulously restored monument embody the city’s architectural and artistic legacy, and there are over 1,000 artworks across the five-building property – and food and beverage offerings are guided by sustainability principles. Honeymooners receive a cake and bubbles; a new flower menu offers curated bouquets. Better yet, Amsterdam-based jewellery designer Bibi van der Velden is the property’s House Jeweller; guests staying at House 020 may wear her exclusive designs throughout their stay. Couples can also enjoy a private Salon Boat canal tour. Rooms from €1,200, including breakfast and VAT. Rosewoodhotels.com
Ancient allure – Cyprus: There’s something about the Mediterranean light. Slow meals under olive trees, ancient ruins, and the sea within view – always. Cyprus is emerging as a new favourite, Dnata Travel reports, with its sun-drenched beaches, Greek and Middle Eastern influences, and excellent value for money making for a fresh yet familiar option. Limassol offers an approachable experience, where hotels such as the Parklane welcome honeymooners with bubbles and cake on arrival, followed by sunset cruises, couples’ spa therapies and candlelit dinners by the shore. From Aphrodite’s Rock to the vineyards of the Troodos Mountains, days are made for exploring…or not. Starting at $3,000 per person, inclusive of five nights’ accommodation, economy class flights and return airport transfers. Dnatatravel.com
Sweet sojourn - Mauritius: TripAdvisor’s top Honeymoon destination of the 2025? Mauritius, ranked by travellers. And among its most established resorts is Sugar Beach. Set on the island’s longest white beach, it channels the vibe of a historic plantation-style ‘Manor House’, surrounded by luxurious Creole-styled Villa Houses. The five-star resort, together with its sister property Long Beach, offers tailor-made honeymoon packages for GCC couples with local touches such as halal-friendly dining and private suite stays to Muslim showers and prayer mats. Newlyweds can book private spa treatments, marine excursions and beachfront moments. Price details are available on request. Sugarbeachmauritius.com
Timeless tradition - Japan: Few countries do tradition quite like Japan – and Dnata Travel’s ten-night itinerary across the Pacific nation certainly showcases their best. Taking in Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, there are unforgettable experiences at every stop. In Kyoto, enjoy in a private kimono photoshoot followed by an intimate tea ceremony, while Hakone offers a breathtaking Mount Fuji helicopter tour and a serene cruise on Lake Ashi. Meanwhile, Nara invites discovery among its gentle deer and UNESCO-listed temples. Osaka rounds out the journey with a bespoke foodie tour and panoramic skyline views. This tailored experience starts at $11,500 per person, with accommodation in five-star hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo and Four Seasons Kyoto. Dnatatravel.com
Serene sophistication – Fiji: It’ll take you a while to get there, but Fiji’s combination of crystal waters with white-glove service is so worth it. Shangri-La Yanuca Island elevates this with its Honeymoon Haven offer, a curated escape made for modern romantics. Start with a candlelit dinner on the beach and stay for the sunrise breakfast – in bed, of course! Packages begin at $220 per night for a minimum of three nights, and include breakfast, a celebration amenity and access to the resort’s waterpark and non-motorized water activities. Prices may vary depending on the season and room type. Shangri-la.com
Wild wonders – South Africa: Five nights of unapologetic elegance, tailormade for honeymooners craving an intimate safari escape. That’s South Africa, which continues to see steady interest at Dnata Travel – thanks to the country’s combination of safari adventures and cosmopolitan cities like Cape Town. The experience starts at $4,600 per person and includes economy class flights and private return airport transfers. Dnatatravel.com
Island intimacy – Sri Lanka: As a destination, Sri Lanka is equal parts warmth and seduction. As a honeymoon destination it’s real and rustic in the best possible way: drive along the coast with music playing, watch elephants cross your path and order more fiery curry than you can eat. Think river safaris, turtle hatcheries, and bespoke city tours. In Yala, daily Jeep drives offer thrilling glimpses of elephants and big cats. Romance is woven throughout: beachfront dinners, bubble baths strewn with petals, and optional couples’ spa rituals. From$2,950 per person for seven nights in private pool villas at luxury beach and jungle resorts such as Anantara Kalutara, Hilton Yala and Cinnamon Life Colombo.
