Profile

The piece Every year, The Rug Company invites a host of international artists and designers to create a unique collection of rugs in collaboration with them. The multicoloured Palette rug was designed in 2008 by English artist Fiona Curran.

The background Fiona is known for her colourful paintings and material assemblage and has exhibited her work throughout the UK and across Europe, Australia and Thailand. ‘Palette depicts an explosion of colour that developed out of painted and collaged forms combined with computer manipulation,’ explains Fiona. Due to her belief that much of our interaction with images takes place through screen-based technology, she wanted to create a sensory experience of colour that was tactile, soft and appealing to touch.

The details Made from Tibetan wool, this rug has been traditionally knotted by expert artisans in Nepal. The process is extremely complex and necessitates many different stages, each of which is carried out by hand. Hand-knotted rugs are renowned for their durability and tend to last for generations. Palette is available in 10 standard sizes and can be customised to other sizes or specific shapes. The colours within the rug can also be adapted if required. The rug pictured measures 2.74m by 1.83m and costs Dh25,633. It is available from The Rug Company’s new showroom in Al Qouz.
