October can still bring daytime temperatures of around 35°C to the UAE. A short flight, however, can lead to cool evenings, mountain landscapes and cities comfortable enough to explore on foot.

Jebel Akhdar, Oman

Jebel Akhdar offers the shortest flight on the list and one of the clearest temperature changes. Located more than 2,000 metres above sea level in Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains, it can be 10°C to 15°C cooler than lower-lying parts of the country.

The area is known for terraced farms, deep wadis and villages built along the mountain slopes. Walking routes connect settlements such as Al Aqur, Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah. Several resorts overlook the canyon and organise guided hikes, stargazing and local food experiences.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required to pass the police checkpoint leading up the mountain. Visitors who prefer not to drive can arrange a hotel transfer from Muscat.

Direct flights connect Muscat with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Jebel Akhdar works best as a three-night break because the road transfer takes up part of the arrival and departure days.
