Kapil Sharma’s cafe issues statement after shooting: We are not giving up

Mumbai: A day after a shocking shooting incident at comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly opened Kap’s Café in Surrey, British Columbia, the team has issued a heartfelt statement expressing both shock and resilience.

The café, co-managed by Sharma’s wife Ginni Chatrath, was targeted in a gunfire attack, allegedly by Khalistani terrorist Harjit Singh Laddi.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite at least nine to twelve bullets being fired at the premises.

"A message from the heart": Cafe

In a statement posted on Instagram Stories, Kap’s Café wrote:

“We opened Kap's Café with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy… To hav violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up.”

The team also extended thanks to supporters for their prayers, DMs, and encouraging messages, and vowed to continue building a safe, welcoming space for the community: “Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap's Café remains a place of warmth and community… See you soon, under better skies.”

The café team expressed heartfelt gratitude to Surrey and Delta Police for their swift response, ensuring public safety. The area includes residential buildings and even a children’s daycare across the street, as noted by journalist Sameer Kaushal, who shared bullet impact visuals from the scene.

Why Kap’s Café was targeted

According to reports, Harjit Singh Laddi, a most-wanted terrorist affiliated with Babbar Khalsa International, claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a post, Laddi accused Kapil Sharma of insulting Nihang Sikhs during a segment on his comedy show. The remarks were perceived as a mockery of Sikh traditions, prompting outrage:

“This mockery is a mockery of Sikh spiritual traditions... No religion or spiritual identity can be made fun of in the guise of comedy,” the post read.

Laddi also claimed he attempted to contact Sharma’s team before the attack but was ignored.

Ongoing investigation

It remains unclear whether the attack was meant as a direct threat to Kapil Sharma or specifically targeted the café. The attackers reportedly fled the scene in a car shortly after opening fire.

Canadian authorities are investigating the case, while increased security measures are likely in the area.
