Legendary Kannada actress B Saroja Devi passed away at her residence in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, on Monday, July 14. She was 87 years old.

According to news agency PTI, the veteran actress died due to age-related ailments.

Fondly known as ‘Kannadathu Paingili’ (meaning Kannada’s parrot in Tamil), Saroja Devi began her film career at the age of 17 with the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955). Her powerful debut performance earned her a National Award, setting the tone for a prolific and illustrious career.

Often hailed as the first female superstar of Kannada cinema, she made a significant mark in Tamil films as well. Her role opposite M.G. Ramachandran in ‘Nadodi Mannan’ (1958) catapulted her to the top ranks of Tamil cinema and won her widespread acclaim.

Despite marrying in 1967, Saroja Devi remained in high demand, especially in the Tamil film industry. She was also affectionately known as ‘Abhinaya Saraswathi’, a title celebrating her expressive acting and grace.

Her passing marks the end of an era for South Indian cinema.
