M. Night Shyamalan to help reboot ‘Tales from the Crypt’

The Cryptkeeper is getting dusted off by TNT as the network teams up with M. Night Shyamalan to bring back Tales from the Crypt.

The Wayward Pines executive producer will curate the anthology series, which will air in a two-hour block, to feature both long and short stories of suspense, horror and the weird that popularised the original show. His partner at Binding Edge Pictures, Ashwin Rajan, will also executive produce.

The show grew out of the original EC Comics series, created by William Gaines, that was popular in the mid-1950s. The comic also featured adaptations of Ray Bradbury science-fiction stories, which is another genre the show could explore.

“This is a new genre for us in our series efforts and a great chance to partner with M. Night Shyamalan, whose blockbuster hit The Visit reminded movie audiences and critics this past summer that he truly is a master of horror,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice-president of original programming for TNT, in a statement.

Shyamalan, whose films have a bit of a twist in narrative, seems excited to be on board.

“To be part of such a beloved brand like Tales from the Crypt, something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into,” Shyamalan said in a statement.

The original comics spawned multiple seasons of the cult show for HBO. The horror block is set to launch on TNT in fall 2016.
