Superman 2025 box office: How James Gunn’s $579 million reboot measures up to Zack Snyder’s DC films

When Superman (2025) touched down in theaters on July 11, it marked the dawn of a fresh, hope-filled DC Universe. The numbers followed suit: a $122 million opening weekend in the US. and Canada, paired with a $95 million international take—far outstripping projections that hovered around $100 million.

Domestic triumph: Setting a new standard

Within a few weeks, Superman soared past key milestones:

• It surpassed Man of Steel’s opening weekend record of $116.6 million to secure the biggest debut for a standalone Superman film.

• With more than $331 million domestically, it narrowly overtook Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s highest-grossing Superman outing at around $330 million. The film had grossed around $873 million worldwide, about $330 million domestic and $543 million international.

Critics and audiences responded well too. Superman currently holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest for a Superman film since the Christopher Reeve classics—signaling not just financial, but creative success.

Global perspective

Worldwide, Superman has grossed around $579 million to date. That’s solid by any measure, and the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025 so far—but still trails behind Snyder’s Man of Steel. The film made about $668 million worldwide, roughly $291 million domestic and $377 million international.

On the other hand, Justice League (2017) made about $657 million worldwide, roughly $229 million domestic and $428 million international. That puts it below both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman in total global earnings.
