From Roman Holiday to Sabrina, choose your Hepburn film
If you watched Audrey Hepburn once, you had to watch her again.
There was no other way. Her elfish smile, quiet, delicate tones didn’t allow you any course of action. And speaking from experience, a summer of Audrey Hepburn films is one well spent. There’s charm and romance of Roman Holiday, the sassiness of Breakfast at Tiffanys, and Sabrina. So, which Hepburn suits your mood?
For instance, at Breakfast at Tiffany’s, One of Hepburn’s most popular roles, Holly Golightly, a woman trying to deal with her own commitment issues. In this film, she’s a socialite who spends her days dodging reality, and trying to make her way through Manhattan (preferably in Givenchy). But when a struggling writer moves into her building, things get twisted—feelings, secrets, and a cat with no name all come into play. You’re roped into this tornado of sweetness, charm, chaos, and emotional walls. The romance is just too pure and touching to move on from.
With Sabrina, Hepburn plays Sabrina Fairchild, the chauffeur’s shy daughter who goes off to Paris and comes back a full-blown fashion icon. Suddenly, casinova son of the wealthy Larrabee family finally notices her—but it’s his older, serious, emotionally repressed brother who really falls in love. And so, welcome to a love triangle, banter, gazes and sharp conversations. And maybe, a punch in the face. Yikes.
In Funny Face, high fashion meets philosophy, with jazz hands. Audrey Hepburn plays Jo, a shy bookstore clerk with a brain full of deep thoughts and no interest in becoming a fashion model. That is, until a pushy magazine editor (played by Kay Thompson) and a charming, much-older photographer (Fred Astaire) whisk her away to Paris. And so, we're zapped into love, endless chaos, and the world of fashion.
As you see, each film offers its own kind of escapism, softly lit, magical and emotionally rich. And by the end of it, you’re not just watching Audrey Hepburn, you’re carried into her world.
A summer spent with her isn’t just well spent. It’s unforgettable.
