After dabbling with dark, realistic cinema, filmmaker Onir tries his hand at romantic comedy.
Onir, known for his realistic films like My Brother Nikhil and Bas Ek Pal, is back with another slice-of-life tale Sorry Bhai, only this time with a tinge of fun and romance. Unlike his earlier dark explorations, Sorry Bhai is a light-hearted film. It stars Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi, Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani and Chitrangada Singh in the lead role.
Onir-Suri combo
Suri is a lucky mascot for Onir, which explains why he was cast in the lead roles in his earlier films. Suri's performance in both films has also won wide appreciation from movie-goers.
"Onir is an extremely talented director and his films stand out from the rest of the Bollywood films. I understand what he expects from me as an actor and it's always great to act with a director of Onir's calibre. Our great rapport is definitely an added advantage," says Suri.
Light-hearted romance
Despite being lucky for each other Suri and Onir haven't had much luck at the box office. Suri's career hasn't progressed since Bas Ek Pal, while Onir is yet to taste commercial success. But they are hoping this will change with Sorry Bhai, an all-out feel-good romantic film.
Sorry Bhai is a tale of a career-obsessed man Harsh (Suri) and his fiancée Aaliyah (Singh). Just before their wedding, Aaliyah meets Harsh's family, only to realise that she has developed feelings for his shy brother (Sharman Joshi).
The film seems to be inspired by the Steve Carell comedy-drama Dan In Real Life. If so, it may well be Joshi who has a more meaty and complex role than Suri.
The dusky beauty is back
One of Sorry Bhai's highlights is the return of the beautiful model-turned-actress, Singh after a 3-year hiatus.
Singh made an impact with her memorable performance in her highly-acclaimed debut flick Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and later did another offbeat film Kal. Many claimed she's the perfect combo of beauty and talent and even drew similarities with the versatile Smita Patel, but Singh quit cinema after marriage. But now the actress feels she's ready to strike a healthy balance between family and work.
When Onir heard of Singh's comeback plans, he sent her the film script, which she liked.
The adorable Irani and Azmi are back after their endearing performance in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. In Sorry Bhai, Irani and Azmi play Suri and Joshi's parents.
