Philippines' CJ Opiaza crowned Miss Grand International, after India's Rachel Gupta resigned

Manila: Christine Juliane "CJ" Opiaza was officially crowned Miss Grand International 2024 on June 3, 2025, following the resignation of the original titleholder, Rachel Gupta of India.

Opiaza had initially secured the 1st runner-up position during the pageant held on October 25, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Gupta was stripped of her crown after she exposed what she claimed in a tell-all video as “harassment, corruption, body shaming and starvation”.

Gupta detailed a harrowing seven-month reign plagued by "neglect, alleged mistreatment, and a lack of support" from the Miss Grand International (MGI) organisation.

MGI later claimed that they stripped her of the crown because she failed to do her pageant duties in Guatemala.

'Toxic environment'

Rachel Gupta’s resignation on May 28, 2025, was surrounded by controversy. 

In a public Instagram post, Gupta cited “broken promises, mistreatment, and a toxic environment” as reasons for her departure. 

Counterclaim

However, the Miss Grand International (MG) Organisation countered her claims, stating that she was officially terminated for breaching contract terms, including skipping an official trip and undertaking unauthorised projects.

With Gupta's departure, Opiaza assumed the title, marking a historic moment as she became the first Filipina to hold the Miss Grand International crown.

Journey to the crown

Opiaza's journey to the crown was marked by her strong performance throughout the competition.

During the final question-and-answer segment, she addressed the pressing issue of war and violence, advocating for kindness and unity among people. 

Her eloquence and stage presence resonated with audiences, solidifying her position as a standout contestant.

Despite the controversies surrounding the title transition, Opiaza's crowning was celebrated in the Philippines.

Many lauding her grit and dedication to representing her country on the international stage.
