Kangana Ranaut is caught in an emotional web again.
She has won the hearts of moviegoers with her debut role as an alcoholic in Gangster and later on wowed audiences with her acclaimed performance as a schizophrenic in Woh Lamhe. However, Kangana Ranaut's last release Shakalaka Boom Boom did not live up to expectations. Now, she will be seen in another complex role in Life In A ... Metro.
Excerpts from an interview ...
e+: Were you disappointed with the failure of Shakalaka Boom Boom?
Kangana Ranaut: Definitely. I was disappointed with the film's failure as it was my first attempt to do something different. After doing two heavy-duty, emotionally charged roles in Gangster and Woh Lamhe, Shakalaka Boom Boom was a welcome change. I worked on my looks as it was a glamorous role but somehow it did not work.
How did you manage to do such psychologically disturbing roles in Gangster and Woh Lamhe, considering that you are neither a trained actress nor have loads of experiences?
I am lucky to work very early in my career with competent filmmakers such as Mahesh Bhatt, Anurag Basu and Mohit Suri. Anurag was clear about the character he wanted me to portray in Gangster and all I had to do was follow his vision. As far as Woh Lamhe is concerned, I had to relive the character of Parveen Babi through Mahesh Bhatt's eyes and I got all the necessary support from him. Thus, it was my sheer luck to have the experience of these filmmakers to help me perform these roles well.
How is the experience of acting once again under Anurag Basu in Life In A ... Metro?
Anurag is a fantastic director. The way he shot Gangster was brilliant and I always wanted to work with him again. Luckily, I got that opportunity in my fourth film. There is a comfort level working with him because we both know what to expect from each other. Moreover, he gives me substantial roles to perform.
What's your character in the film?
I play Neha who works in a call centre and is an emotional fool. She enters into relationships without getting a commitment from her lovers.
She then finds it difficult to come to terms with the situation. Rahul's character (played by Sharman Joshi) plays an important role in stabilising Neha's life.
Will the audience continue seeing you in depressed roles?
Actually, these are the roles I am being offered, but I would love to do comedy and romantic roles. Andaz Apna Apna (a comedy film starring Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor) happens to be my favourite movie.
